On this day:
Mock trials
Young people stepped effortlessly into the shoes of prosecutors, judges and defence lawyers during the Criminal Justice Challenge earlier this month. The aim of the event, which took place in the Council Chamber in Waltham Forest Town Hall, was to encourage young people to become a part of the criminal justice system and show them the effects crime has on people who are convicted.
During the event a number of different trial scenarios were followed. These included a sentencing for carrying an offensive weapon and a bail application.
Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Enforcement and Protection, Cllr Afzal Akram, said:
“The students who took part were articulate, confident and persuasive, and I hope they got a real insight into how the trial process works.
“The fundamental thing about this type of project is that it demonstrates the consequences of breaking the law and acts as a strong deterrent to young people.”
Five pupils from each of Norlington School for Boys, Tom Hood School, George Mitchell School, Highams Park School and Kelmscott School took part.
The event was put together by Waltham Forest Magistrates’ Court, VT Education and Skills, Waltham Forest Council, the Youth Offending Team, Crown Prosecution Service and the Police.
